Choosing Your Breast Implants

Breast Augmentation Before & After PhotosOne of the great things about breast augmentation is that not every procedure will yield the same results. Each woman’s body is unique, and breast implants have been designed to accommodate a wide variety of styles and preferences that can enhance the breasts according to the woman’s desires and body shape. When you come in for your consultation about breast augmentation surgery with Dr. Carlton Scroggins, here are some of the options you will discuss as you look at the different types of breast implants.

Material

All breast implants have an outer shell made of silicone, but the implant type is designated by the inside material: silicone or saline. Silicone implants are filled with silicone gel whereas saline implants are filled with saltwater. These materials enhance your breasts in different ways. Silicone implants create a more natural look and feel while saline implants offer a more rigid, full, and tight look. Saline implants are more affordable and will cause a noticeable change in the appearance of the breast if a rupture occurs. A silicone implant rupture may need an MRI to detect.

Shape

Breast implants can be round or anatomically (“teardrop”) shaped. Round implants have uniform fullness throughout while teardrop-shaped implants are more like the natural breast shape: fuller at the bottom and thinner at the top. Many women who prefer a more natural look choose teardrop-shaped implants while those who desire a more voluptuous look with more cleavage often choose round implants.

Profile

The breast implant profile determines its forward projection from the chest. A low-profile implant will have a wider base but less forward projection. In contrast, a high-profile implant will have a more narrow base and greater forward projection. The width of the chest wall and the natural placement of the breasts will greatly affect how different profile implants will look.

Texture

Breast implants can either be smooth and slippery or have a rough, textured surface. Smooth implants may move freely within the breast pocket while textured breast implants bind to the tissue capsule that surrounds them, making them less likely to shift. Some studies have suggested that textured implants may be less likely to cause capsular contracture, though the research is unclear. With under-the-muscle placement, it is usually impossible to observe a difference between textured or smooth implants. Nonetheless, textured implants are thicker and more likely to develop noticeable folds, which could be a problem for women with little breast tissue or over-the-muscle placement.

Volume

Breast implant volume is measured in cubic centimeters (cc’s). Greater volume means a larger implant; for example, 300cc implants are larger than 250cc implants. The additional volume in breast implants can help to correct breast volume loss caused by pregnancy, nursing, aging, or weight loss. It also enhances breast fullness in women with naturally small breasts.

As you talk with Dr. Scroggins and choose between these styles and preferences for your breast implants, you can receive a completely customized breast augmentation procedure. These options are available to help you achieve your desired results with breast augmentation surgery.

Breast Augmentation Recovery Guide

Dr. Scroggins - Breast Augmentation Before and After PhotosBreast augmentation can be an incredibly satisfying experience as you learn to enjoy and appreciate your improved appearance. However, before you can fully reap the rewards, you must go through the recovery process after the surgery. To make your recovery experience as easy as possible, follow this breast augmentation recovery guide.

Guidelines for BEFORE Your Surgery

In preparation for your breast augmentation, here are several things you should do to help your recovery process go smoothly:

  • Stop smoking: You will need to stop smoking before surgery, as this can inhibit circulation and slow down your recovery.
  • Have someone to help you: You should plan to have a responsible caregiver drive you home after surgery and be with you to care for you during the first few days after the procedure.
  • Have the right clothing: Make sure you have enough button-up shirts that are easy to put on so that you can follow the recommendation of not lifting your arms above your shoulders for the first two weeks after surgery.
  • Adopt healthy habits: You should also adopt habits of healthy eating, drinking lots of fluids, and sleeping on your back so that these are easier for you to do after your procedure.

Guidelines for AFTER Your Surgery

After your breast augmentation, here’s what you should do to ensure a quick and safe recovery:

  • Follow your surgeon’s instructions: You should carefully follow the recommendations that Dr. Scroggins has given you.
  • Take prescribed medication: Be sure to take your prescribed medications according to instructions, as these will help your body heal and manage any discomfort or pain.
  • Caring for your breasts: You will need to wear your surgical bra as directed. You will also need to avoid having too much physical contact with your breasts for at least three weeks. Recognize that while you may experience swelling, this is only temporary and will subside within three to five weeks.
  • Rest: You should rest a lot for the first few days and will need to avoid exercise or strenuous activities for a full six weeks. You will also need to avoid sleeping on your side or stomach and instead sleep on your back propped up on pillows to relieve the pressure on your breasts. Most patients can return to work within one week, but this depends on the type of work you do. Talk to Dr. Scroggins about any concerns or questions you may have so that he can advise you accordingly.
  • Continue healthy habits: You should continue to avoid smoking, drink plenty of fluids, and eat healthy foods to give your body the nutrients necessary for healthy healing.

Every patient has a slightly different experience with breast augmentation recovery, but by following these recommendations and talking with Dr. Scroggins, you can make your recovery experience as smooth as possible. A smooth recovery after breast augmentation will make it that much easier to enjoy the results of your breast augmentation and your newly improved feminine curves.

Perfect Enhancement for Your Wedding Day

Plastic Surgery for Brides

Plastic Surgery for Brides in Washington DCThere are so many things a bride worries over on her wedding day. Looking amazing should not be one of those things. Weddings can create a lot of anxiety about appearance for a bride. It’s the one day where all eyes and camera lenses are on you. This has led many brides to a surgeon’s office before they walk to the alter. Pre-wedding plastic surgery is on the rise as brides transform themselves for their big wedding day.

Breast Augmentation

A big fear many brides have is that they aren’t going to look amazing in their wedding dress. For some, breasts that are too small prevent their dresses from fitting correctly. To wear your dream dress with confidence, you may want a breast augmentation to fill out the top completely.

Breast augmentation increases the size and corrects the shape of the breasts using implants. You have a choice of the placement of saline or silicone implants. The combination of implant type and placement will provide varying degrees of a natural breast look and feel. Breast augmentation should be performed at least six months prior to your wedding to ensure that all swelling has subsided so your breasts will look their best in your gown.

Fat Transfer

For brides that would like to increase the size of their breasts but prefer a more subtle, natural enhancement, there is fat transfer. After fat is harvested from problem areas of the body using liposuction, fat transfer involves the injection of the purified fat into the breasts. This procedure uses only 100 percent patient-harvested fat tissue to increase the size of the breasts. Results look and feel natural because the fat is natural. Fat transfer is only ideal for women looking to have a slight increase in breast size. One treatment may achieve an increase up to one bra cup size.

Fat transfer has the added benefit of fat removal from trouble areas of the body. The tissue is taken mainly from the abdomen, hips, or thighs. This slims your body contours to allow for a more visibly toned physique. These body contouring enhancements will have you looking gorgeous in your wedding dress and amazing out of it.

Liposuction

Many brides choose to diet leading up to their wedding in order to be at peak perfection on the big day. As time gets closer, there may be stubborn fat deposits that remain despite diet and exercise. Liposuction uses a thin tube to vacuum suction out fatty tissue from trouble areas of the body such as the abdomen, hips, thighs, back, and arms. It can help you shed those last few unwanted inches and eliminate unnecessary fat.

Skin Resurfacing

Every bride desires that healthy, wedding-day glow. Wrinkles and acne may be dulling your skin and leave you less than fresh-faced. Skin resurfacing using Retin-A® helps reverse the effects of sun damage on the skin. Retin-A® removes the outer, dead layer of skin cells. This leaves new, healing skin cells in their place. Skin resurfacing helps you achieve smooth, glowing skin for your big day.

If you are seeking a helping enhancement for your wedding day or simply desire a boost for everyday life, contact Dr. Scroggins’ office today. Contact us at (301) 220-0400, or fill out our online contact form for more information.

How Long Do Plastic Surgery Results Last?

shutterstock_113038492With the desire of many to maintain a youthful appearance and look their best, plastic surgery has seen a steady increase over the last few decades. And the variety of treatments that exists today allows patients to undergo procedures to improve virtually any physical aspect of their face and/or body. While plastic surgery is typically very safe and effective, some often wonder how long the results will last.

Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation enhances the shape, volume, and projection of the breasts using either saline or silicone implants. Although implants are not considered to be lifetime devices, the results of this procedure can last for ten to twenty years or longer.

Liposuction

Liposuction removes stubborn fat deposits from areas all over the body through a thin hollow tube, called a cannula, connected to a state-of-the-art suctioning device. The results from this procedure are intended to be permanent as long as patients maintain a stable weight. It’s important that liposuction not be viewed as a form of weight loss surgery.

Eyelid Lift

An eyelid lift, also called “blepharoplasty,” restores a youthful appearance to the face by eliminating excess fat and sagging skin in the eye area. Done well, results from an eyelid lift can last between 10 and 15 years. Although an eyelid lift will not stop the natural aging process, a youthful appearance can be maintained by living a healthy lifestyle and protecting your face from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays at all times.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Breast Cancer Pink Ribbon

Breast Cancer Awareness Month

With October upon us, you’ve likely noticed people of all ages
wearing all sorts of pink ribbons, stickers, and clothing in honor of breast cancer awareness. While advancements in research and testing have greatly improved, the fact remains that more than 230,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer every year. Treating this disease often requires the removal of one or more of the breasts that can drastically affect a woman’s physique, as well as her self-confidence.

To restore a normal appearance to the chest area, a cosmetic procedure known as breast reconstruction can work wonders.

How is Breast Reconstruction Performed?

There are several options for breast reconstruction following a mastectomy, including using a breast implant or flap reconstruction.

Breast Implant

The most common reconstruction technique combines skin expansion and subsequent insertion of a breast implant. This reconstructive technique involves placing an expander directly underneath the skin and tissue. After the expander is slowly filled with a sterile solution over multiple sessions, a saline or silicone implant is exchanged with the expander to provide permanent shape to the breast. If Dr. Scroggins recommends using a breast implant for your breast reconstruction, he will discuss the different breast implant options during your consultation.

Flap Reconstruction

This reconstructive technique uses donor skin, tissue, and muscle, to create a flap where the breast used to exist. Flap reconstruction is typically performed using one of the following techniques:

  • TRAM (tissue is transferred from the abdomen)
  • Latissimus dorsi (tissue is transferred from the back)

The Future of Breast Reconstruction

Although plastic surgery offers safe and effective methods for breast reconstruction, new technologies and innovative methods using stem cells and fat grafting are being explored to further improve existing techniques to ensure the longest lasting results possible.

While many women focus on preventing breast cancer throughout October, be sure to regularly keep up with mammograms and yearly checkups to ensure you stay cancer free.

If you have questions about breast reconstruction, we encourage you to contact Plastic Surgery of Greater Washington practice by calling (301) 220-0400 or filling out our online contact form. Get Back Your Pre-Pregnancy Body

shutterstock_218681281The after-effects of pregnancy often leave negative consequences for women. If you’re like many mothers, you’ve likely tried dieting and exercising after having children to get your pre-pregnancy body back. However, even if you somehow find the time to put together healthy meals and make it to the gym on a regular basis, there’s no guarantee that you’ll end up with satisfying results. At his Greater Washington practice, Dr. Carlton Scroggins offers the “Mommy Makeover” procedure to effectively restore women’s bodies to a physique similar to what they had before pregnancy.

Quickly becoming one of the most desired cosmetic treatments in plastic surgery, the Mommy Makeover consists of a variety of breast and body procedures that are performed together in one single surgery. The areas of the body that need improvement will determine which of the following procedures you will need to achieve the best results during your Mommy Makeover:

Breast Lift

Pregnancy and breastfeeding often leave the breasts hanging with downward pointing nipples. A breast lift corrects these condition by raising the breasts and repositioning the nipples to a more acceptable location.

Breast Augmentation

The breasts tend to lose volume after having children. With the insertion of either saline or silicone implants, fullness and shape are restored to boost the attractiveness of the chest area.

Tummy Tuck

Pregnancy can permanently stretch the abdominal muscles and cause the skin around the stomach to sag. A tummy tuck removes excess fat, tightens the abdominal muscles, and removes excess skin to flatten and tone the midsection.

Liposuction

Weight gain caused by pregnancy typically leaves the body with excess fat deposits on multiple areas of the body, such as the arms, back, stomach, and thighs. Liposuction permanently eliminates fatty tissue from these areas to restore a slimmer, more contoured physique.

Whether you’re just entering motherhood or have been a mother for many years, a Mommy Makeover can noticeably improve the appearance of your body.

To schedule a consultation with Dr. Carlton Scroggins, please call (301) 220-0400 or fill out our online contact form today. Along with his experienced and friendly staff, Dr. Scroggins is dedicated to helping you achieve the best results possible. We look forward to seeing you soon!

Choosing the Right Implant for Your Breast Augmentation

A female surgeon in operating room holding an implant in each hand Many women are dissatisfied with at least one aspect of their breasts. Breast augmentation involves the placement of implants into the breasts to improve their size and shape. This procedure offers a wide range of options to achieve the specific breast shape, size, and projection that the patient desires.

In addition to choosing your implant placement (above or below the pectoral muscle), incision location, and implant size, there are many different types of breast implants from which to choose.

During your consultation, Dr. Scroggins will evaluate your needs and desires to help determine the best implant type, shape, and texture for you.

Implant Type

Saline

Saline implants are made of a silicone shell filled with a sterile saltwater solution. If a rupture occurs, it will be noticeable immediately, and the body will harmlessly absorb the solution.

Silicone

Silicone implants are made of a silicone shell filled with a silicone gel. If a rupture occurs, an MRI may be required to detect it.

Implant Shape

Teardrop or “Gummy Bear”

Teardrop-shaped implants, commonly known as “gummy bear implants,” are anatomically shaped to imitate the slope of a natural breast. These implants are made of a thicker, form-stable silicone gel that makes them firmer and able to retain their shape.

Round

Round implants create a fuller breast appearance with more projection, especially at the top of the breast. If the implant shifts within the breast pocket, patients do not have to worry about them changing the appearance of the breast.

Implant Surface Texture

Smooth

Implants with a smooth surface feel soft because they can move within the breast pocket to mimic the movement of natural breast tissue.

Textured

Textured implants grip the breast tissue around it so that they do not move around and get repositioned. Most teardrop implants are textured to ensure that they do not move out of their designated position.

If you are considering breast augmentation in the greater Washington area, please call (301) 220-0400 or fill out our online contact form today. Dr. Scroggins is a board-certified plastic surgeon and will help you decide the best implant for you based on your physical anatomy and desires.

Plastic Surgery Misconceptions

With the rise in popularity of plastic surgery over the last few decades and the media attention on celebrity plastic surgeries gone wrong, many people have a misguided idea of this medical specialty. Here is the truth to several common misconceptions about plastic surgery.

Misconception: Plastic Surgery Results Look Fake

The term ‘plastic surgery’ covers a wide range of procedures and treatments, and when they are performed by a trained and experienced plastic surgeon, the results can appear completely natural. Although some celebrity breast augmentations and facial implants may look fake, this is often because the person desired that appearance or they underwent the surgery with a doctor who was not qualified. Making sure that your surgeon is trained and experienced in performing the procedure you desire will ensure that you get the most natural-looking results possible.

Misconception: Plastic Surgery Is All About Vanity

Plastic surgery encompasses the fields of cosmetic surgery as well as reconstructive surgery. Cosmetic plastic surgery is probably what comes to mind when someone mentions plastic surgery, and this field focuses on creating an appearance that is aesthetically pleasing. Rather than undergoing procedures to be vain, most people have cosmetic surgery to significantly improve their confidence and relieve anxiety they have about their appearance.

Collage of words about plastic surgeryReconstructive plastic surgery provides a normal appearance and regular functioning of the body as a result of an injury or birth defect. A deformity can impair a person physically, and it can take a mental toll by causing a person to feel as though he or she is an outsider and not socially accepted. For example, reconstructive surgery for congenital abnormalities prevents children from the torment of being teased for an aspect of their appearance that is out of their control. Reconstructive hand surgery, burn scar revision, breast reconstruction after mastectomy, and cleft lip repair are just a few examples of reconstructive plastic surgery procedures.

Misconception: Plastic Surgery Is Only for Women

This presumption is most likely based on the fact that the majority of plastic surgery patients are women, but in recent years the number of men choosing to undergo plastic surgery has increased dramatically. Liposuction for a slimmer waist, rhinoplasty for improved nose shape, blepharoplasty for eyelid tightening, and gynecomastia surgery to reduce overdeveloped male breasts are the top four cosmetic surgeries that men underwent in 2012, according to The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS). Less invasive procedures, such as BOTOX® Cosmetic and skin resurfacing for facial rejuvenation, are among the most common plastic surgery treatments undergone by men.

Dr. Scroggins has been performing plastic surgery procedures for almost 20 years and specializes in cosmetic breast surgery and body contouring. If you are interested in plastic surgery in the Washington D.C. or Baltimore area, please call (301) 220-0400 or fill out our online contact form today to schedule your consultation. We look forward to hearing from you!

Tips For Choosing The Correct Bra Size

elegant blue bra on red hangerThe correct fitting bra provides women with the best comfort and appearance. However, about 80 percent of women wear the incorrect bra size. Wearing the wrong size can cause many physical problems, such as neck, back, and shoulder pain, not to mention leave behind a less attractive appearance that can affect a woman’s self-confidence.

Generally, all bras are the same in that they contain a number followed by an alphabetical letter, so how do you distinguish the right bra from the wrong one? In order to find a bra size that best fits you, it is important that you either see a professional fitter or complete the following three steps:

Step 1: Measure Your Band Size

While exhaling with your bra on, wrap a measuring tape around the bottom of your bust and take the smallest measurement possible. After rounding to the nearest whole number, add two inches if the number is even and three inches if the number is odd.

Step 2: Measure Your Cup Size

While wearing a non-padded bra, stand straight and measure the fullest part of your bust. Round your number to the nearest whole number.

Step 3: Calculate Your Bra Size

To find your bra size, subtract your band number from your cup number. For each difference of an inch, increase your overall cup number by one size.

Example:

Step 1:  34” bust measurement (under) = 36” band

Step 2:  39” bust measurement (over)

Step 3:  39”- 36” = 3” (C cup)

Your Bra Size is probably 36C

If the calculation of your cup size is more than four inches larger than your band size, or if you have droopy or pendulous breasts, this measurement may not be accurate.

If the Difference between Step 1 and Step 2 is…

   Your Cup Size is…

                      0” to ½”

                         AA

                      ½” to 1”

                          A

                         2”

                          B

                         3”

                          C

                         4”

                          D

Choosing the right size bra is an important aspect for not only looking great, but feeling confident about yourself.
